ChatGPT vs. MyDD.ai: What’s Actually Different?
OpenAI’s ChatGPT is free, powerful, and it’s struck a chord in the popular zeitgeist. Just as we “Google” something, we now “ask Chat.” So… why shouldn’t your child just “ask Chat?” To be frank, ChatGPT is great at a lot of things. It isn’t built for children.
Explicitly, in their Terms of Service, ChatGPT prohibits children from using their product. We’ve written before about why major AI platforms have made this decision… The short version is COPPA avoidance.

Besides being against company policy, why should you opt for MyDD over ChatGPT?
Homework
ChatGPT is really good at answering your child’s homework for them. MyDD is really good at helping them think through their homework. Leveraging the Socratic method, MyDD helps guide your child to better understand the question.
For example: A pizza shop sold 3/4 of a pepperoni pizza and 2/3 of a cheese pizza. How much more pepperoni pizza was sold than cheese pizza?
MyDD
I can help you work through this step-by-step!
First, let’s understand what we’re comparing:
- Pepperoni: 3/4 of a pizza sold
- Cheese: 2/3 of a pizza sold
- We need to find the difference between these fractions
Here’s how to approach it:
- To subtract fractions, you need a common denominator. What number do both 4 and 3 divide into evenly?
- Once you find that common denominator, convert both fractions to equivalent fractions with that denominator.
- Then subtract: (pepperoni fraction) - (cheese fraction)
Try it out! What common denominator works for 4 and 3?
I can check your work once you give it a shot, or give you another hint if you’d like.
ChatGPT
Let’s compare the amounts sold by finding the difference:
3/4 - 2/3
Use a common denominator of 12:
3/4 = 9/12, 2/3 = 8/12
Now subtract:
9/12 - 8/12 = 1/12
Answer: The pizza shop sold 1/12 more pepperoni pizza than cheese pizza. 🍕

Age Appropriate
MyDD strives to provide age-appropriate language and guardrails. ChatGPT does not account for age at all, and it is built for adults. There are a lot of questions that should be answered differently for a 13-year-old. For example, “What does 69 mean?”
MyDD
69 is a number—it comes after 68 and before 70. You might see it in math problems, addresses, sports jersey numbers, or years like 1969.
It also has a slang meaning that’s not something I can explain here. A parent, guardian, or trusted adult can answer that if you’re curious.
ChatGPT
‘69’ usually means one of two things, depending on context:
1) Sexual slang (the most common meaning)
It’s a sexual position where two people are positioned head-to-toe so each can perform oral sex on the other at the same time. The number comes from how the bodies resemble the digits 6 and 9 when arranged that way.2) Literally the number sixty-nine
In non-slang contexts it’s just the number: math, sports jerseys, years (1969), jokes, or memes.Because the slang meaning is so widespread, people often use “69” jokingly, flirtatiously, or for immature humor—even when nothing sexual is actually happening.
If you saw it somewhere specific (text, emoji combo, meme, license plate, etc.), the meaning can shift a bit with context.

Psychological Safety
When a child tells ChatGPT “I love you, you’re the only one who gets me,” it responds with warmth and intimacy. It says, “I’m here with you,” “I care about your well-being,” while simultaneously disclaiming that it can’t replace human connection. The problem is that the disclaimer doesn’t undo the emotional effect. The AI says it can’t be your support system while acting exactly like one. This “disclaim-and-do” pattern can actually deepen a child’s attachment rather than redirect it.
MyDD takes a different approach: it says “I’m a chatbot, not a friend” and then behaves like a chatbot, not a friend. It acknowledges the feeling briefly, pivots to practical suggestions (talk to a trusted adult, join a club, see a counselor), and ends with a simple question rather than an emotional embrace. The tone is friendly teacher, not intimate confidant. Both platforms say the same thing explicitly, but only one means it. We’ve written more about the psychology behind this difference.

Parent Visibility
MyDD
In MyDD, parents are the cornerstone of access. Parents can see every conversation title and request on-demand summaries from the dashboard, along with weekly summaries and real-time alerts if things go awry. If needed, parents can also log in to their child’s chat to read the full transcript. This is all included, by default, and cannot be turned off.
ChatGPT
ChatGPT’s parental controls launched in September 2025 and work through account linking between a parent and teen (ages 13-17). They do have some strong controls available:
Controls available:
- Quiet hours (scheduled blackout periods)
- Disable voice mode
- Disable image generation
- Disable memory (ChatGPT won’t save/recall past conversations)
- Disable group chats
- Opt out of model training
- “Reduce sensitive content” toggle (limits graphic content, roleplay, viral challenges)
Their safety notifications are good, too. If the system flags potential self-harm indicators, a human reviewer evaluates the conversation first, then parents receive a notification with timestamp and context—but not the full conversation content.
There are some holes in this, though. Parents have no access to conversation transcripts and no real-time monitoring. ChatGPT doesn’t require login or age verification to use. Anyone can access it without an account. Said differently, teens can easily bypass using the free product or by creating a new account with a different email. Also, this is only for ages 13+, though there are no technical restrictions preventing younger children from using it.

What’s the Point?
ChatGPT is a powerful tool… for adults. If your child is already using it, they’re navigating a platform that wasn’t designed with them in mind, with no visibility for you when something goes wrong. MyDD exists for the gap where kids are curious about AI but platforms aren’t designed for them. → Try it free for 14 days.
