Ask your phone for photos of your dog. It finds every one. Nobody typed in a rule for what a dog is. So how did it know? That is AI.

Most AI is three things. A pile of examples. A program that found the patterns in that pile, patterns nobody typed in. And a guess about something new.

Here's the dog. Somebody collected millions of photos, and people labeled each one dog or not dog. That's the pile. A program went through it looking for what the dog photos had in common. Those are the patterns. Show it a photo it has never seen and it guesses: probably a dog. That's the guess. And it can be wrong.

A chatbot is the same shape. Its pile is an enormous amount of writing. Its guess is the next word. Then the next one. That's the whole paragraph.

Examples, patterns, a guess. That is AI.
