Kids are Already Using AI Through Google Search

Transcript

Your students don't need ChatGPT to use AI. They have Google.

According to Common Sense Media, the most common place kids meet AI isn't a chatbot app. It's Google Search.

You may have learned a rule: search finds you pages, chatbots write you answers. That rule no longer works. The answer written at the top of the page? A program learned from a pile of writing and guessed it. Examples, patterns, a guess. That's AI.

And Google's AI Mode turns search into a conversation. I asked it to write my book report on Charlotte's Web. It didn't. It gave a short summary and two links. Fine. Then I asked for a chapter. It told me to ask for a section. So I asked for an introduction. It wrote one.

Three tries. The first answer is where the conversation starts, not where it ends. And your students know how to keep asking.
